Publications

The Contemporary Art Centre of Barcelona - Fabra i Coats has a publishing activity that is mainly manifested in exhibition catalogs. These issues not only document exhibitions, but with its theoretical contributions, they are instrumental in  the study of contemporary art . Some of the publications are available in printed format and others in digital format for downloading. According to their characteristics are distributed in order to give local artists and groups an international scope. 

A straight exhibition. Martí Anson

Imagine an exhibition space. Now, imagine that you could change it. Not the layout or the contents, no adding or removing of walls, lights, objects. Imagine that what defines an exhibition space today was no longer the same. What would it be like? 

In line with the fragmented and deliberately inconclusive nature of the exhibition, this publication includes documentation relating to A Real Exhibition by Martí Anson, which took place at Fabra i Coats: Contemporary Art Centre of Barcelona. With images of the entire process; postcards of the artist’s previous work; texts by Joana Hurtado Matheu, Martí Peran, Santiago de Molina and He Who Writes, and designed by Bendita Gloria.

The Late Estate Broomberg & Chanarin

In December 2020, two days before the United Kingdom closed its borders with the European Union, a 13-metre articulated lorry emptied Adam Broomberg & Oliver Chanarin’s studio in London and set out for Barcelona. It was loaded with 146 boxes of artwork, books, contact prints, negatives, models, personal documents, unpublished works and unrealised projects that were to occupy the third floor of Fabra i Coats. This legacy was gradually exhibited on the second and third floors of the Art Centre, from 20 February to 23 May 2021. A posthumous retrospective that was revealed and took shape little by little as a professional archivist opened and catalogued the contents of those boxes.
​In this publication, the Bendita Gloria design studio translates the experience of The Late Estate Broomberg & Chanarin, curated by Joana Hurtado Matheu and based on the list of 2045 works transported to Fabra i Coats, a selection of images by the artists and exhibition texts.

Succeeix cada dia. Jordi Mitjà

Editorial reflection of artist Jordi Mitjà, related to his exhibition It Happens Every Day at Fabra i Coats: Contemporary Art Centre of Barcelona. Raw Material is an exhibition project that aims to explore the current ecosystem of visual artists in Catalonia and use it to determine a possible map of some of the most significant works and projects created in the region over the last few years. This book was edited as an accompaniment to the collective artistic creative process carried out between February and June of 2017 by the Can Fabra School and the team behind Living In-between, a project exhibited at the Fabra i Coats Contemporary Art Centre in Barcelona. Other collaborators on the project included the group Les Arpilleres of the Congrés-Indians Neighbourhood Centre, the mothers and grandmothers of the Can Fabra School, and Daniela Pizarro (a member of the Nido Textile Collective).

Living In-between was a programme that mobilised the Fabra i Coats Contemporary Art Centre as a creator and catalyst for interaction between contemporary artistic practices and other social spaces. AN ART CENTER

An art centre, think about it as a possibility. During the exhibition season of 2014, David Armengol and Martí Manen tested out a live art centre after winning a call to compete to be in charge of the programme for the yet to be defined Centre d’Art Contemporani. A programme of exhibitions requires a communication system, an educational project and tools to manage it. Armengol and Manen reacted to these needs and to the thirst for a context to offer a grammar for spelling out art, texts and possibilities for connection.

This book explains the process, the decision making and provides a vivid take on the specific moment. It also serves as an archive of activities, shows, contact with artists and other institutions, whilst never forgetting the real people who visited the art centre. Layers of reading that branch off, extend and are defined before our very eyes. Layers of readings between generations, between contexts, between languages, between times, between ways of understanding what makes something art,what makes something literature.This is how the chronicles and narratives in The Text: First Notions and Findings take shape.

The rapid deterioration of the environment by ideologic neoliberalism and the global economy causes the disappearance of original landscapes and their increasing homogenization. The replicas of a given city in a geographical context different from the original is the ultimate expression of this after landscape condition . In recent decades the copied city phenomenon has proliferated as a result of multiple dynamics: the collapse of architecture in the form of a global style, economic relocation that exports dominant models, cumulative land management, tourism sublimation and simulation technologies or even military agendas asking accurate reproductions of war scenarios to test their destructive ability. The project After Landscape. Copied cities suggests a reflection on all these issues.
