Art i antifranquisme

In a society devastated physically and morally during and after the Spanish Civil War, art and social movements became forms of active dissidence and transformation in the shadow of institutionalised culture.

The exhibition Another End. THE REMAINDER. Art and Anti-Francoism, held at El Born CCM between November 2022 and April 2023, emphasised that society’s cultural resistance by bringing together works by nineteen contemporary artists of various generations, who turned the memory of those silenced by the regime into artistic material. Art as an expression of what we cannot forget. Art as a mechanism for imagining other possibilities.

The publication you are holding is the result of artists’ reflections on the realities pushed to the margins of history, without which the historical narrative is not complete. They are an allusion to the forms of dissidence and personal stories linked to the deceit of the transition, the persistence of repression and injustice.

Historical memory should serve to stitch together our personal and collective narratives so that we can express them politically, beyond spectacle, and thus start to consolidate new endings.
